Data Center Relocation and Migration
Full-Facility Data Center Moves
Moving an entire data center at once: every rack, server, storage array and cable de-installed, transported and re-installed at the new site.
A full-facility data center move is the physical relocation of everything in a data center at once: every rack, server, storage array, network device and cable is de-installed, inventoried, packed, transported and re-installed at a new site. DataTech Logistics plans and performs that physical work. Your IT team handles shutdown, data and application cutover.
What does a full-facility data center move involve?
A full-facility move covers every asset in the room, not a subset. The work starts with a site survey of both buildings: loading docks, freight elevators, floor loading, door widths and the route between them. From that survey we build a serial-number-level inventory and rack elevations for every cabinet. On move day, crews de-install hardware in the agreed order, label every cable and port, and pack each device in anti-static wrap, custom foam or purpose-built crates. Equipment travels in climate-controlled, air-ride vehicles under 24/7 physical surveillance in transit, and every handoff is scanned and signed on a chain-of-custody record. At the destination, crews re-rack to the approved elevations, recable to the port map, power on and check status lights before handing each rack to your IT team. We scope full-facility moves from 20-cabinet edge rooms to 2,000+ rack enterprise data centers, and the method is the same at every size.
How long does it take to move an entire data center?
It depends on four things: how many racks you have, how far the equipment travels, how long your business can tolerate each outage window, and how ready the destination is. Planning almost always takes longer than the physical move. Inventory, dependency mapping by your IT team, destination power and cooling readiness, and long-lead items such as new cabinets or circuits set the real schedule. The move itself usually runs in one or more weekend windows: de-install on the first night, transport overnight, then re-install and power-on before the business day. Distance matters because commercial drivers work under federal hours-of-service limits, so long-haul moves need team drivers or planned stops. The data center relocation timeline guide walks through each phase in order, from discovery to the post-move review, so you can build a realistic schedule before you request quotes from movers.
Should you move the whole facility at once or in phases?
Move everything at once when the source site has a hard exit date, the environment fits inside a single outage window, or applications are so interdependent that splitting them adds more risk than it removes. Move in phases when no single window is long enough, when some systems cannot be down at the same time, or when the destination is still being built out. Many full-facility projects end up as a hybrid: a few planned waves, each one a complete physical move of a defined group of racks. Whichever you choose, the physical method does not change. Each wave gets its own inventory, packing plan, truck load plan and chain-of-custody record. Your IT team decides which systems belong in which wave based on application dependencies, and we build the physical schedule around those groups. For a side-by-side look at the options, read lift-and-shift, cold and phased migration approaches.
What does DataTech handle, and what does your IT team handle?
A full-facility move has two sets of owners, and the plan works best when the line between them is written down early. DataTech Logistics owns the physical work: hardware leaving the source racks, crossing the road and landing powered on in the destination racks. Your IT team owns everything that touches data, software and configuration.
| DataTech Logistics | Your IT team |
|---|---|
| Site surveys, inventory and rack elevations | Application dependency mapping and move groups |
| De-install, labeling, packing and crating | Shutdown sequencing and copies of critical data |
| Climate-controlled, air-ride transport with chain of custody | Data and application cutover |
| Re-rack, recabling, power-on and status-light checks | Configuration, application testing and sign-off |
Before move day, confirm the destination room meets the temperature and humidity envelope in ASHRAE TC 9.9 guidance and that fire protection for the IT room follows NFPA 75. Hardware arriving from a cold truck also needs time to acclimatize before power-on, which we build into the schedule.
